Dundee is known throughout Scotland as the City of the 3 J’s - Jam, Journalism and Jute.
Jute was the cloth on which its fortune was made. Keiller and its world famous marmalades covers the jam part. DC Thomson and its Sunday Post read at one time by almost every Scot and its comics such as the Dandy and the Beano made publishing in Dundee famous.
Chess-wise Dundee has a strong history. It was the scene in 1867 of one of the first international chess tournament and more recently it had one of only two clubs in Scotland to have its own premises. Scotland’s first two Grandmasters, Paul Motwani and Colin McNab both come from Dundee. Dundee organises its own weekend congress.
